Is Wine Good For The Body?

Family and friends have argued for centuries whether or not there are any health benefits in wine. All too often we come across great advice that all seems too good to be true. So is the benefit of wine fact or fantasy?

Ever heard the saying “a glass of wine a day keeps the doctor away”? Ok so maybe it’s “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” but that’s not the version that I first heard. So is a glass of wine a day good for you or not?

Let’s uncork the truth…

Harvard researchers are known for their thoroughness and diligence in all aspects. So in 1992 Harvard researchers tested this theory of wine having medical benefits. Low and behold the truth was revealed. Studies showed that red wine can reduce the risks of heart disease.

Ok, so now you may be thinking of adding a glass of wine a day to your daily diet right? Perhaps you should read on…

Red Wine

Yes, that’s right. It’s red wine that contains the ingredients beneficial to your body. The skin and seeds of red grapes contains an antioxidant only known as flavonoid.

This miraculous antioxidant can prevent coronary problems in 3 ways:

  • Flavonoids reduce production of low density lipoprotein (LDL = bad cholesterol)

  • They increase high density lipoprotein (HDL=good cholesterol)

  • Reduce the blood clotting and fat profiles during a meal
That’s not all. It’s possible that there may be more in red wine than meets the eye. I’m speaking of the affects of alcohol. You don’t need a chemist or biologist to tell you that alcohol helps most individuals to relax.

Interestingly enough another study at Harvard suggested that small amounts of red wine consumed each day may decrease the chances of kidney stones in women. However it wasn’t concrete so it’s not fact at this point in time.

How to maximize these benefits

While there are no hard and fast rules, you shouldn’t exceed 2 glasses of red wine per 24 hours. This ensures that you get the maximum benefits.

At the University of California tests were done on a multitude of wines. They were checking for the highest concentration of flavonoids. They quickly learned that dry wines contained more antioxidants than sweet wines.

Here’s a list of selections tested on:

  • Cabernet Sauvignon

  • Petit Syrah

  • Pinot Noir

Does Price Matter?

Yes, the lower priced wines lack the quality of rich fruit. It is quality of fruit that’s responsible for the high concentration of flavonoid. Of course the lesser quality wines still have some benefits so I wouldn’t disclude them altogether.

Moderation is the key when dealing with alcohol. Here are a few choices I’d like you to look at:

A Healthy Start (Things You Should Know)

With each meal it's important to combine complex carbohydrates and protein. And the most important meal of the day is.. dun dun dun. Yep breakfast!
Now I know you've heard that a million times but shrugged it off. Now I'm going to tell you why you really shouldn't do that if you want to have a great figure and want to have optimum health.

An Empty Stomach
You need to eat small meals every 2-3. This may seem extreme at first but it's necessary to avoid the body going into what's known as starvation mode which stores extra fat. You are fasting when you sleep plus I doubt you ate just before bed so tack on an extra 3 hours to that.

We're estimating that your body went 11 hours without food and now you wake up first thing in the morning with an empty stomach.

Add In Some Fruit

The best time to eat fruit is anytime before 4 pm. Starting your day with the natural sugars contained in fruit gives you plenty of opportunity to work off those sugars before bed so your body won't store them. Have a full serving of fruit either in your oatmeal or on the side, this starts your day with a good helping of fiber.

Fiber contains antioxidants which clean out and purify the body on an ongoing basis. They make you go to the bathroom more and emptying your body of nasty toxins.
Here are some fresh fruits that are great for morning time:

  • Pears
  • Any kind of citrus
  • Kiwis
  • Apples
  • Melons
  • Peaches
  • Any kind of berries

These can be eaten on the side at meal time or later for a healthy snack.

The Truth About Cereal

Avoid all boxed cereal in the stores. Most of them are loaded with sugar, salt, preservatives, chemicals, beached flours, and other junk. I wouldn't trust them no matter what they say on the label. If you love cereal and feel that you'd much prefer that over oatmeal or eggs then make your own. The best ingredients to make an awesome cereal are:

  • Flaxseed
  • Bee pollen
  • Wheat germ
  • Oats
  • Nuts
The wheat germ and flaxseed have the essential fibers your body needs and the bee pollen has a multitude of minerals and vitamins. Now with these foods on your table at breakfast you can start you day out properly and give you body the jump start it needs.
Now just because you had a healthy breakfast doesn't mean you can just chow down on anything else you'd like throughout the day. Try going for some well known healthy cookbooks. I'm not just talking about the random recipe books you find at Barnes and Noble.
Do your research! Listed here are 3 of my favorites that help keep me on tract. I used to think eating healthy was bland and disgusting till I learned of some great recipes that go along well with my lifestyle.

Fats and sugars place major strain on the endocrine system. So what's an endoctrine system you ask? Well it's the body's system that consists of the endocrine glands and functions which regulates the body's activities. Trust me, that's not something you want to mess up regularily.

It is commonly believed that all bad fats come from animals. This is false.

Animal fat can truely get a bad rap, but the truth is that some of the worst fats come from plantsl. It's well known that food companies want to make as much money as possible by selling to consumers. Don't we all? The way they do it is a bit on the shady side though.

To accomplish this they use cheap ingredients. They need to make it taste good to sell it, and it must have a long shelf life too.

Fats are the best way to accomplish this, both in flavor and in shelf life prolonging the life of the processed food and adding more flavor to it. Did you know that deli meat, canned soups, and many other products are loaded with sugar too?

Twenty percent of the common American's diet is now sugar and it's not even a food group! This much sugar creates all sorts of problems in the human body.

The 3 Types of Fats are:

  1. Saturated

  2. Unsaturated

Saturated fats come from animals and become solid at room temperature. They contain triglycerides which are harmful when in the blood and can cause a multitude of diseases. Polyunsaturated and Monounsaturated are both kinds of unsaturated fats. The types of fats are always liquid when present in room temperature.

They contain what's known as phospholipids which are your essential fatty acids. EFAs are needed for brain and body functions. Yep, they help you think straight!

They also help to product hormones in the body that are vital to each individual.Trans fats are the most common and were created by mankind. They were invented to increase the life of processed foods.

A Little History:

In 1977 the average US Citizen consumed an average of 18% fat. Ten years later in 1987, the average fat consumption went up to 28%!

Recent studies show that average American eats a shocking 38% fat! So how much saturated and Trans fats are ok to consume? None! Unsaturated fats are the only kind that a acceptable and that number should not go over 20%.Tip of the DayBefore you buy something at the grocery check the label for Saturated and Trans Fats.

Unsaturated fats are what your body really needs and will keep you slim and healthy.
